The Netherlands decided to send up to 1,400 more soldiers to Afghanistan to support a peacekeeping mission that will clear the way for reconstruction efforts.
''The mission to Afghanistan will take place,'' Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said.
The Dutch government has come under international pressure to contribute to the mission in southern Afghanistan.
Prime Minister Balkenende said Jan. 13 the Dutch government intends to send the troops to Afghanistan. D66, the smallest of the three parties in the ruling coalition, almost caused a government collapse last month by threatening to block the military mission.
