On Board INS Savitri (Visakhapatnam), Feb 12: India will soon arm its submarines with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, a capability acquired only by a few nations.
India's move to arm its submarines with such an undersea strike capability was revealed by President A P J Abdul Kalam at the ninth presidential fleet review here.
Though Defence Research and Development Organisation scientists had refused to divulge whether India was aiming for such a capability, Kalam made it clear that India planned to go ahead with modifying BrahMos missiles to give it an undersea launch capability.
The President hoped the new class of submarines, which the Indian Navy is on the verge of acquiring, would be made capable of firing BrahMos and other vertically fired missiles.
The President's comments assume significance as the supreme commander of armed forces is all set to become the first Indian head of the state to embark on an undersea journey tomorrow.
