The salvage and rescue ship USS Grasp (ARS 51) will be decommissioned and transferred to the military sealift command in a ceremony at the ship's homeport of Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006 at 10:00 a.m.
Although the ship is to be decommissioned as a United States Ship, it will continue to serve the nation as an asset of the Military Sealift Command for what is hoped to be at least another 20 years.
Following decommissioning the ship will enter an extensive maintenance period during which it will be converted for operation by a crew of civilian mariners . That includes habitability modifications for the civilian mariners and military detachments such as mobile diving and salvage units .
