U.S. orders five more Predators

The Pentagon has ordered another five MQ-9 Predators, the unmanned aircraft that has become a lethal weapon for the United States in the war on terrorism.

The MQ-9 Predator B is fitted with Hellfire missiles that have been used repeatedly by the CIA in attacks on suspected terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The most recent Predator strike was last week when a Hellfire came streaking out of the sky and demolished a home in Pakistan where al-Qaida's reputed second in command, Ayman Zawahiri, was thought to be.

Manufacturer General Atomics calls the MQ-9 a "hunter-killer" aircraft with an operation ceiling of 50,000 feet and an external payload capability of 3,000 pounds.
