Taiwan Releases Photos of China Missiles to Aid Budget Request

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense released satellite photos of Chinese military bases in a rare move to win support for a long-stalled arms purchase plan.

The ministry yesterday released several photos, including one showing a missile base in China's southern province of Jiangxi about 700 kilometers (438 miles) from Taiwan, it said in a caption for the photo. President Chen Shui-bian said on Jan. 1 China has installed 784 missiles that target Taiwan.

``By releasing the satellite photos, the defense ministry is reinforcing the necessity of arms purchases,'' said Andrew Yang, secretary general of Taiwan's Council for Advanced Policy Studies. ``If China conducts a pre-emptive strike, Taiwan's current status is vulnerable.''

Taiwan split from the mainland in 1949 when the Kuomintang fled the Communists of Mao Zedong. Relations worsened after Chen was elected president in 2000 on a campaign pledging independence for the island. China has said it will take the island by force should it declare independence.
