South Korea Expands Fleet

South Korea is becoming a major user of submarines. The current nine boat fleet will be doubled over the next fifteen years. Three new Type 214 class boats will be built in the next five years, and another six by 2020. Meanwhile, a new class of 3,000 ton boats will be designed and built between 2010 and 2022. The Type 214 is a 1,700 ton German design, that is, for the South Korean navy, built in South Korean yards. South Korea currently has eight Type 209 boats, an 1,100 ton German design from which the Type 214 evolved. The Type 214 uses fuel cells, which enable it to stay underwater for days at a time. This, plus the quiet operation and modern electronics, make these boats equal to many nuclear subs.
