DD(X) program getting top priority

PASCAGOULA -- DD(X) is beginning to get more attention at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in the wake of an apparent change of attitude by the Navy concerning the destroyer.

That attention is enough for Ship Systems President Phil Teel to set up the program as a separate entity under his reorganization, with the program's head reporting directly to him -- an indication that the DD(X) program carries highest priority.

"I don't think it's ever not been a top priority program," Teel said. "But given that the DD(X) now is in the detailed design phase, we want to make sure that we put all the right management attention and get all the resources that program needs to succeed.

"In fact, we've gotten approval by the Department of Defense to actually build the first of several ships in addition to the detailed design," he said. "It's very critical to our future, so we've moved that out (separately) because it really is, in many ways, a lot different than the rest of our programs."
