Algeria seeks naval upgrade

MOSCOW [MENL] -- Algeria has been examining a multi-billion dollar project to modernize its Soviet-origin navy.

Russian defense sources said Algeria wants Russia to upgrade Kilo-class submarines as well as surface vessels in the Algerian Navy. They said the upgrade could be one of several Algerian naval modernization projects implemented by Moscow.

The submarine project was said to have been a leading item on the agenda of Algerian Chief of Staff Gen. Salah Qaid during his recent visit to Russia. During his visit in May 2005, Qaid discussed a range of procurement, including that of up to 50 MiG-29STM aircraft.

In the late 1980s, Algeria purchased two Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines, also termed Project 877EKM, from Moscow. The submarines, with a length of 78.3 meters and displacement weight of 3,076 tons, could be equipped with six 533 mm torpedoes or 24 mines.
