Northrop plant in line for $148 million deal, 150 new jobs

The Navy and Northrop Grumman are excited about a potential Christmas present from the federal government: nearly $148 million to build and test submarines for clandestine SEAL operations at the company's Bay Bridge plant.

Congress is poised to approve the money, which would boost a project that's been in jeopardy for more than two years since the first prototype was delivered to the fleet.

The project would lead to an expansion of Northrop Grumman's Oceanic & Naval Systems group facility and create about 150 new jobs.

Northrop officials said the Navy's order could include up to five subs, which a defense analyst said could cost roughly $200 million each.
