'Although a new design it incorporates many of the Seaker II sub systems, as well as tactical control and ground stations,' Denel's Ossie Searle told uvonline.com. Design work began 18 months ago and although wind tunnel test have been successfully completed, the first test flight will not occur until towards the end of 2006. UVOnline understands that the most likely engine will be the Subaru EA-82T, although the Rotax 914 is also under consideration.
Bateleur has a maximum altitude of 25,000 ft and a radius range of 750 km carrying a payload up to 200 kg. Payloads include Argos-410 E/O and IR. Minimum liter speed is 120 km/h and maximum speed is 250 km/h. Edurance during realistic mission conditions is around 12 hours although its maximum stated endurance is 18-24 hours.
Searle confirmed that the Bateleur has already been chosen by the South African Navy and Air Force for maritime patrol, anti-smuggling and border patrol operations. Denel's existing UAV customers are also being targetted for sales, some of whom are located in the Middle East but Searle declined to identify them.
It will be 2-3 years before deliveries to the Navy and Air Force begin.
