PH planning to acquire 3 submarines, other military assets

Moving toward territorial defense, the country plans to acquire three submarines and so many other military assets, Northern Luzon Command head Major Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang said.

In a paper, Catapang said submarines, by their inherent stealth capability, may be deployed to monitor and protect the country's extensive maritime domains.

These vessels are the conventional-powered or diesel-electric type and generally cheaper than nuclear-powered ones.
