US Promises Nuclear Umbrella for S. Korea

The U.S. military plans to map out specific action plans to deter North Korea's nuclear threat, providing a stronger nuclear umbrella for South Korea, a senior military officer said.

The agreement was made at the Military Committee Meeting (MCM) in Washington, D.C., as the United States accepted South Korea's request for a concrete pledge to provide an upgraded nuclear shield to cope with increasing threats posed by Pyongyang's unconventional weapons.

Gen. B. B. Bell, commander of the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), has been mandated by the top consultative body of the South Korean and U.S. militaries to take charge of drawing up plans on the U.S. provision of improved nuclear capabilities in case of a war on the Korean Peninsula, he said.
