Navy destroyers HMCS Iroquois and HMCS Algonquin retire in May

HMCS_Algonquin (DDG 283)Two Royal Canadian Navy destroyers will be officially retired May 1 as the navy prepares to radically shake up how it deploys sailors.

HMCS Iroquois and HMCS Algonquin will be “paid off” at the beginning of next month, a ceremonial term that equates to being decommissioned.

The saying dates back to when sailors were paid off when their ships returned to port and their commissions ended.
