Bittersweet farewell to Vandegrift frigate


In a ceremony that was both joyful reunion and somber farewell Thursday, the Navy decommissioned the ship Vandegrift — the latest of the frigate class to be retired.

“Sir, all cannon balls have been removed and the cannon has been spiked,” a sailor called out from somewhere off the ship’s bow.

“Very well,” replied Cmdr. Daryl Robbin, executive officer of the ship.
