Aircraft Big Winners In 2008 Appropriations Deal

Defense aircraft were big winners in the congressional agreement over regular fiscal 2008 defense appropriations, according to the report accompanying the bill, and they could benefit further from supplemental funding expected later.

House and Senate appropriators Nov. 6 hammered out an agreement that, except for embattled Army and Air Force helicopter programs, provided robust funding for fighters, warhorse helicopters, transport and unmanned aircraft.

According to Senate appropriations staff, the compromise bill fully funds procurement of four Joint Cargo Aircraft for the Army; 52 UH-60 Black Hawk, 44 UH-72 Lakota and 29 CH-47 Chinook helos; 24 F/A-18E/Fs and 18 EA-18Gs; 26 V-22s; three E-2D aircraft; MH-60S and MH-60R helos; 20 F-22A Raptors; nine C-130Js; and 12 F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft, as well as advance procurement for 16 F-35s in FY '09; 24 Predator UAVs for the Air Force; five Global Hawk UAVs; and Marine Corps Shadow UAVs.
