Sarbe creating submarine distress beacon

Walrus class submarineThe Royal Netherlands Navy has hired a British unit of Digital Angel Corp. to develop and supply a submarine crew escape system.

The Sarbe division of DAC`s London-based subsidiary, Signature Industries, will create a beacon that functions reliably on the surface of the water or if the submarine is unable to surface, DAC said Friday in a statement.

The initial development contract to Sarbe, which will work with Weir Strachan and Henshaw on the project, is for $150,000 and Sarbe expects additional orders for equipment purchases.

The Walrus class vessels will be the first submarines to be fitted with the equipment. Sarbe is also pursuing opportunities to supply beacons to Scorpene submarines that have been ordered by the Navies of Malaysia, India and Chile.
