HH-47 to the rescue?

Critics claim it's too big, but that's the point, supporters say

HH-47 ChinookThe Air Force's decision to entrust the future of combat search and rescue to the Boeing Co. HH-47 helicopter has drawn sharp criticism that it's the wrong aircraft for important aspects of the mission.

But supporters say the HH-47 is robust and capable. It would be an upgraded version of the Army's venerable CH-47 Chinook, which has proven itself time and again, especially in the high altitude of Afghanistan.

The Nov. 9 announcement that the HH-47 had won the three-way CSAR-X competition surprised many people who thought it was too big and not nimble enough to fly risky rescue missions. The HH-47 is about 33 percent longer than the helicopter it is replacing, the Sikorsky HH-60G Pave Hawk.
