Algeria has received the first advanced MiG-29s from Russia.
The Algerian Air Force received two MiG-29SMT fighter-jets from RSK MiG. Russian industry sources said the aircraft arrived last week and was part of a multi-billion-dollar arms deal signed with the North African state.
"The first two MiG-29SMT fighters have been shipped to Algeria this week," an industry source told the Moscow-based Interfax news agency on Dec. 8.
In March 2006, Algeria agreed to a $7.5 billion deal for the procurement of aircraft, main battle tanks and other military platforms from Moscow. Officials said the deliveries have begun and would accelerate during 2007.
