Kings of the skies

Kiran Mk IIThey were mobbed, adulated , loved and cheered for. And why not, for these were the men who stole the thunder , made the skies shudder, and fanned hundreds of desires to join the air force.

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Indian Air Force, the Suryakiran team put on a spectacular show for an equally enthusiastic audience in Vadodara recently.

Suryakiran is the formation aerobatic team, formed in 1996 which has showcased its skill in over 530 displays across the country.

During the display, the team operates at speeds of 200 and 600 kmph and flies within a height band of 30 to 1,500 meters. Unlike most teams which fly either frontline fighter aircraft or advanced jet trainers, this team is proud to fly an indigenous aircraft, the Kiran-Mk-II which is used by the IAF to train its fighter pilots.
