Slowly and without much fanfare Israel is tightening its cooperation with NATO. An Israeli corvette this summer participated in a NATO exercise in Romania. Infantrymen joined war games in the Ukraine and a NATO AWACS plane was in Israel demonstrating its capabilities. It is a gradual change. Israel used to consider itself an island surrounded by enemies, a realization of a Biblical prophecy that it is 'A nation that will dwell in solitude.'
It wasn`t quite so. Russia, via Czechoslovakia, provided weapons during the first Arab-Israel war. France armed Israel later on, and the United States airlifted vital aid during and since the 1973 war. These have all been bilateral ties, and with Russia and France they ended abruptly.
Israelis have always thought in bilateral terms but that is changing.
